Barkway Reading Room Refurbishment
Barkway Reading Room is closed for the refurbishment of the historic building. During this period, the Barkway Local History Group will hold its events and monthly meetings at the nearby Social Club.
October Update: We’re pleased to share that the new window blinds have now been fitted in the Reading Room, giving the space a fresh new look while also helping to protect the displays from direct sunlight once they’re reinstalled. The electrical work is scheduled to take place later this month, which will bring brighter, more focused lighting to showcase our displays beautifully. As you know, the Barkway Reading Room remains closed while the exciting refurbishment of this historic building continues. In the meantime, the Barkway Local History Group is holding all monthly meetings at the nearby Social Club, so do come along and join us there!
August Update: Work on the Reading Room refurbishment is moving ahead steadily. We have received two quotes for window blinds, which will be passed on to the Parish Council for sign-off at the next meeting. For the lighting, one quote is in and another is on the way. We’ve also met with a potential supplier for signage and will work with him on possible designs. In terms of display cabinets, we’re exploring options from other museums and second-hand sources to find pieces that will suit our collection of artefacts and objects. Once the work on the new entrance and interior decoration is complete and paid for, we hope to be notified of the remaining budget available from the Parish Council that could go towards further interior improvements.
